Letter From Dean Anuj Mehrotra

I offer congratulations to the Class of 2022 of the George Washington University School of Business. This class deserves to not just be congratulated for the accomplishment of earning a degree, but moreover its outstanding adaptability, perseverance, and can-do spirit in overcoming the disruptions and meeting the challenges brought about by the global crisis.

Whether you earned a four-year degree, a graduate degree or doctoral degree, you can all be proud of what you have achieved. You have successfully completed a rigorous course of study at one of the world’s finest institutions, gaining the knowledge, skills and aptitude necessary to compete — and excel — in today’s global business environment. You have also earned something equally valuable: membership in the GWSB alumni community, a 50,000-strong, worldwide network of dynamic individuals who have compiled a remarkable record of success in countless fields of endeavor. I urge you to stay engaged and stay in touch with your classmates, as well as those who have gone before at GWSB. I guarantee in the years to come you will find the GWSB alumni community to be an enormous professional asset.

While commencement is an important life milestone signifying a new beginning, the start of a professional career, or the pursuit of additional, advanced academic challenges, I would also urge you to stay connected with our school. Your education was enhanced significantly by former GWSB students who gave generously of their time and talents in sharing their “real-world” business experience with current students. I hope the students who follow you can count on you to “pay it forward.” I ask each of you to do your part (and then some) to be a supportive member of our great community.

I am confident that your GWSB education has equipped you to succeed in today’s business environment and in adapting to its shifting demands. Digital media innovator Jay Samit, independent vice chairman of Deloitte, was on the mark when he said, “Lifelong learning is no longer a luxury but a necessity for employment.” At GWSB, we are committed to the concept of lifelong learning. You can count on us to be here for you to offer the resources you need to continue learning. Whether you are looking to up-skill, re-skill, or change career paths, we invite you to “Return + Learn” at GWSB.

Again, congratulations and best wishes for your every future success.

All the best,

Anuj Mehrotra, Ph.D.
Dean

Following decades in international business, Christine Brown-Quinn embarked on a new career in 2010 to share with aspiring professionals around the world practical, hands-on business strategies to fast-track their careers. Known as the ‘Female Capitalist’, Christine unveils what really matters in getting ahead in demanding corporate environments through her webinars, workshops and one-one coaching. As a former managing director in international finance in London, Christine is well versed in what it takes to forge a thriving career in highly pressurized, alpha environments. In March 2020 Christine launched her book Unlock Your Career Success – Knowing the Unwritten Rules Changes Everything. W. Russell Ramsey

Undergraduate Celebration Keynote Speaker: W. Russell Ramsey (BBA '81)

W. Russell “Russ” Ramsey is a successful entrepreneur, financier, businessman, educational leader and philanthropist. He has built  multibillion dollar businesses in the fields of investment banking and money management, invested in dozens of start-up companies and has been an active philanthropic investor, helping at-risk families. Ramsey co-founded Friedman, Billings, Ramsey Group (FBR) in 1989, a top-ten investment bank where he was president and co-chief executive officer through 2001. Now, GW MBA and undergraduate students manage approximately $8 million of endowment capital across four funds. The endowment payout from GW RSIF supports the GW Ramsey Scholars program where annually the top ten students each receive $5,000 and a GW Ramsey Scholar designation. To date, $150,000 has been awarded to 30 GW Ramsey Scholars. Ramsey serves as chair of the GW Investment Institute Governing Board. Ramsey is a native Washingtonian. Shadane Ferraro

Master's and Doctoral Celebration Student Speaker: Shadane Ferraro (MTA '22)

Shadane Makeda Ferraro is a leader by nature, philanthropist, writer, motivational speaker and businesswoman. She started the Master of Tourism Administration (MTA) program in 2020, when the world was forced to shut its doors, and has paddled her way through the waves of the pandemic with her studies. Her highest achievement outside of scholastic settings was being part of a panel discussion with leaders from the UNWTO, Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), World Bank, World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) on poverty reduction, environmental protection, and climate change in 2017. Following the 2017 UNWTO conference, she was a representative of Jamaica at the Center for Responsible Travel (CREST) conference in 2018 in Washington, D.C. In 2019, she took on the role as a hospitality F&B manager in training at the Country Club of Florida and moved on to Bald Head Island. Currently, Shadane is working on her first book to inspire the minds of children living in poverty by shifting the paradigm of a poverty driven mindset to one of abundance and prosperity. Recently, she was invited to the 36th BEYA STEM conference, where she delivered a powerful message of resilience and courage that motivated more than 60 high school students on their transition to university life.

Mariam Zara

Undergraduate Celebration Student Speaker: Mariam Zara (BBA '22)

Mariam Zara is graduating with a bachelor’s in business administration with a dual concentration in marketing, innovation, and entrepreneurship and a minor in public health. Throughout her experience at GW, she was involved in the Residence Hall Association, GWWIB, AIESEC, Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, and Phi Sigma Pi National Honors Fraternity. Coming from Istanbul, Turkey, Mariam felt lost, vulnerable, alone when arriving to GW. However, throughout the years she has learned to put herself out there and explore all the opportunities and resources GW has to offer. Since she was a freshman, Mariam has worked with the GW Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship as an Entrepreneurial Fellow, where she has not only competed and represented GW at various pitch competitions but has also moderated several panels on her own that have been featured on both national and international news. Passion for creativity, innovation, and growth are a few of the many factors that continue to motivate Mariam and prepare her to embark on her post-graduate journey.

GW ALMA MATER

Hail Alma Mater
To thy spirit guiding,
Knowledge thy closest friend
In its strength abiding,
